about the artist
Sherrie Parenteau is a professional artist and mother of two based in Sterling, CT. Parenteau obtained her Bachelor of Fine Art’s degree from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 2009.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Parenteau’s newest series of paintings are built upon a psychological space as experienced in childhood, yet with an adult’s perception. It’s not about the child’s viewpoint at the time, but rather a lens both experiencing it and observing it. Childhood is a time when social norms and expectations are evolving, a time of innocence and vulnerability, and a time of social conditioning. Often one or more of the children in her paintings are aware of the viewer. This interaction between the viewer and the piece intentionally puts the viewer at once present and directly implicated. All adults are impacted in children’s lives in some way, as children are basically hostages both willing and unwilling, necessarily but also at the whim of adults own imperfect psychological needs.
